Episode 11: Highland Brewing Company, Asheville, NC

Hello, everyone!

This week’s episode is the time I had a lovely chat (and tour) with Katie Smith of Highland Brewing Company in Asheville. Katie’s one of the newest brewers for Highland so I was pleased to be able to sit down with her to talk about her career at Highland and her start in beer. Alas, I’m too faraway now, but I bet this year’s Cold Mountain is delicious. If you’re in Asheville, hoist a few for me, please.

There’s also a mini-episode of my review of a flight of Highland’s beer. You can listen to that tomorrow! If you want to see the brewery for yourself, please to go to the Harpy Hour Instagram feed for pics and say  hello on Twitter.

Next week (Monday, to be precise), join me in Charlotte as I hang out with Rachael Cardwell of NoDa Brewing Company! Cheers!

Episode 10: Distilling the delicious at Dark Corner Distillery

At last, you see the fruits of my labours! I’ve returned from a two-week trip to my old stomping grounds of the Southeastern US with a plethora of interviews to share!

The first up is a bit of a change from the previous episodes. Usually, it’s all craft beer here at the Harpy Hour headquarters (headquarters being a standing desk with a mewling cat at my feet), but I do love some liquor upon occasion. And when that liquor is locally made and freakin’ incredible, I am so in.

So we start with talking to Roxy Fenten, co-founder of Dark Corner Distillery in the heart of downtown Greenville, SC. She was wonderful to chat with and do yourself a favour, listener, make a point to pass through Greenville and stop by to sample their lovely products. (I can’t guarantee it’ll be there when you go, but if the absinthe is available, you have to try it.) I’m still thinking about that gin three weeks later.

Also, swing by the Upstate Craft Beer Company and Quest Brewing Company while you’re in Greenville. The former also has a nice menu to complement their many beers (made in-house and some nice regionals), and the latter has a cozy space that is a hit with the locals.

Expect a new episode to drop every Sunday as I have many adventures to share with you. Follow the podcast on Twitter, or on Instagram. Cheers!

Episode 10C: Jalapeno Gose at Barley’s Taproom

Oh, so many mini-episodes that are headed your way! This one was done a week ago today as I stopped into Barley’s Taproom for a quick pint. Our server helped me select a jalapeno gose from Carolina Bauernhaus in Anderson, SC. (Guys, there was nothing in Anderson when I was a young’un.)  This marked the beginning of really delicious jalapeno beers I tried this trip!

My second brewery visit was to Quest Brewing Company in Greenville, SC. Tucked in a cul-de-sac off Haywood Road, the taproom/tasting room is a cozy space and on that Sunday afternoon, I stopped by to try a flight of their beers. (Quest brought home the gold in 2016 at the World Beer Cup awards for their Ponce Cucumber Jalapeno Saison. Sadly, it was not there when I was sipping so I did not get to try it.) But I did try four of their offering and recorded a fun mini-sode about it. I am taking pics of all the breweries I’m visiting on my Southeastern tour so please follow along on Instagram! Cheers!
