Episode 38 – Yellowhammer Brewing

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
I wrap up the Alabama part of the 50 States Beer Project this Friday by chatting with Dana Stricklen and Sonya Petroff of Yellowhammer Brewing. Yellowhammer not only brews beer, but as you will hear in the interview, soon they will have a distillery as well!

And I want to thank all of my interviewees for September. I hope to some day visit Alabama because great beer = will travel.

Come see me tomorrow at the Food Feminism Fermentation conference at McGill! It will be fun, I promise you.

Also, follow the show on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. You can hear Harpy Hour on Apple Podcasts and Stitcher.

Because I will be out of town next week, there will be no new episode on Friday, October 6th. But it’s Alaska’s turn at the table on the 13th so be sure to tune in then! Thanks for listening!

Episode 37 – Michelle Williams of Good People Brewing Company

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Here we are again, celebrating the best Alabama has to offer in craft beer!

This week, I chat with Michelle Williams from Good People Brewing Company. The brewery, located in Birmingham, makes the claim of being the first and oldest in the state! Take a glance at their website and you’ll see Good People commits themselves to making good beer. I enjoyed my interview with Michelle and therefore plan on making my way to Good Beer in the future.  Seems like you should do the same?

Reminder I am in Montreal on September 30th for the Food Feminism Fermentation Conference at McGill University. Joined by Jen Nadwodny (former HH interviewee and Dieu du Ciel brewer), Deborah Wood (international beer judge), and Laura Urtnowski (co-founder of Brasseurs du Nord/Boreale). Therefore, I’d love to see some of your shining faces there! Maybe we can grab a beer afterwards?

Say hi on Twitter, Instagram, and/or Facebook. Additionally, you can call the Harpy Hour Hotline: 1-833-85-HARPY (1-833-854-2779). Find the podcast on Stitcher and Apple Podcasts. Rate, review, recommend to help the show grow!

Episode 36 – Carie Partain of Free the Hops

Happy Friday, everyone!

We continue with the 50 States Beer Project, with this month’s focus on Alabama. And seeing as how I have a certain interest in beer laws, I contacted Carie Partain of Free the Hops, a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to educating Alabamans about current beer legislation. Because Carie is the current head of Free the Hops, she is perfect to talk to about it. I hope you all enjoy the interview with her as much as I did conducting it!

Same housekeeping as usual: listen to the show on Stitcher or Apple Podcasts. Review, rate, recommend, svp! Follow me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Something to get off your chest? Call 1-833-85-HARPY (1-833-854-2779) and let me know! For example, I’d love to hear about the summer beers that rocked your world.

It seems like I should mention I will be on the Gender in the Beer Industry panel at the Food Feminism Fermentation conference at McGill University on September 30th. As a result of your support and word of mouth, I’m nervous and excited. Come out if you can. Say hi in person!

Most of all, thank you thank you thank you for listening.

Episode 35 – Carrie Machen of Back Forty Beer Company (and the launch of the 50 States Beer Project)

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Happy Friday, everyone!

Today I launch the 50 States Beer Project. My goal is to have interviews from women working in beer in all 50 States. This is something I have been thinking of for a while, and I just decided to go for it! As a result, Alabama is the first on the list.

Carrie Machen, production manager at Back Forty Beer Company in Gadsden, Alabama, is the first interviewee. I appreciate Carrie taking time out of her schedule to chat with me. Also, if you have had Back Forty’s beer, tag photos of your beverages on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #50StatesBeerProject! (I look forward to being able to head there one day to drink some myself.)

In addition to the 50 States Beer Project, I will be on a Gender in the Beer Industry panel September 30th in Montreal. Details here. Come out, listen, and say hello afterwards.

I’m also launching a Patreon page sometime this month. I’d like to be able to meet more women in this field and gather more stories. With your help, I can try. I promise you cool rewards if you do so.

Harpy Hour is wherever fine podcasts are listened to: Apple Podcasts, Stitcher. Please rate/review/recommend to help the show grow! You can always call the Harpy Hour Hotline: 1-833-85-HARPY (1-833-854-2779). It’s toll-free in the US and Canada. Follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Thank you again for listening. You are the best.

Episode 34 – Amy Neufeld & Lauren Zimbalatti of The Exchange Brewery

Happy Friday!

(Though if you live anywhere east of me, it’s probably like, Happy Friday Evening!) The Exchange Brewery is awesome, y’all. It is likely the one of the coolest breweries I’ve been to. Sitting down with Lauren and Amy to chat about beer may be a highlight of my summer. And I also touched their droolworthy foeders in the proper brewery itself. Hence, you should listen then plan a trip to visit them in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

There are a couple of big announcements next week. And I would like to thank everyone for being patient with the episodes as of late. There’s a bit of family illness happening so I’m just making sure there’s at least an episode every Friday!

Follow the show on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Listen to the shows where fine podcasts are aired (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher).  Email me at marisa@harpyhour.com, or call 1-877-85-HARPY (1-877-854-2779). While that number is toll-free in the US and Canada, if you want to call in, you can do so by using sending me a voice memo recorded on your smartphone. Email it and I will try to get it on the air!

Thank you so much for listening! See you next week!

Episode 33 – Dana Connor of Oast House Brewers

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Finally, your Friday episode!

Today I speak with Dana Connor from Oast House Brewers, located between St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake. With their distinctive candystripe colours, Oast House makes incredible beer with a local flair. I enjoyed my visit, sampled some delicious beers, and came away feeling happy.

Because summer is nearly over, I suggest you get yourself a bottle of something delightful–preferably Oast House if you have it–and sit in the sun. As always, I appreciate Dana for talking to me and the ladies in the Taproom for suggesting samples for me to try.

Either way, listen to Harpy Hour here, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher. Say hello on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Call 1-833-85-HARPY (1-833-854-2779) to tell me of your summer beer.

Most of all, thank you for listening. Please recommend and review the show. I would love that.

Episode 28 – Barley Days (and now we are 1!)

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
It marks a year since I started Harpy Hour, a year since idle thought morphed into real life fancy.

A huge thank you to all the women I’ve met and interviewed. Their stories are what make this podcast great. A doubly huge thank you to all of you who listen: you make my day!

This week I chat with Dani and Angie of the venerable Barley Days Brewery in gorgeous Picton, Ontario. Angie is the Taproom Manager; Dani is their top Sales Rep. Barley Days is especially relevant (they were the first, I believe) since Picton and the surrounding area have become a craft beer hotspot. I appreciate them giving me some of their time in addition to allowing me to sample beer!

If you are looking for a beer roadtrip that is easy on the eyes and the budget, check out Barley Days as well as the following breweries:

I’m probably missing others, so let me know!

Because Harpy Hour is turning one, I’d like to ask you, the listener, to be part of the program going forward. There is a toll-free (in the US and Canada) number for you to call as I will end Friday episodes with a question for you to answer! From here on out, Fridays will be new full length episodes, and Mondays will be listener mini-episodes. I will kick off the week with feedback from you about this week’s question. Sometimes it will be silly, sometimes it will be slightly serious, but most of all, it will be a chance for you to participate.

You got your dialing finger ready? Good! The number is 1-833-85-HARPY (833-854-2779). This week’s question is: What beers did you celebrate Canada Day/Fourth of July with? Since I will be listening to your messages, I may have to edit for clarity and length. I can’t wait to hear your call!

Furthermore, Harpy Hour is found on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher for your listening pleasure. You can say hi, let me know about someone to interview, or talk about beer with me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Untappd. As always, rating, reviewing, recommending can keep this lil podcast growing. Maybe I’ll even get to come hang out with you!

See you on Monday!

Episode 25 – Dani Neal of Beer & Sexism

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
We’ve all been there, whether it’s a beer festival, a pub/bar, or a bottle shop. The inappropriate comments, the patronizing attitude, the disbelief that you, a woman, loves and knows about beer. It’s irritating, infuriating, and frankly, we are tired of it.

Dani Neal, one of the founders and creators of Beer and Sexism, a website that tells the stories of women who work in beer, is my guest this week. This subject is especially relevant given the recent backlash against sexist beer labels and because of the BA’s strong stance supporting women and minorities from problematic behaviour. Beer and Sexism posts those stories to drive change in the industry. I love that this website exists, and as a result, this is a great interview about an timely subject.

Let’s hear your feedback about your own experiences as a woman in beer. Check out their website to share your story.

The show also lives on iTunes and Stitcher, therefore leaving a rating and review helps the show reach a wide audience. Say hi on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram! Find me on Untappd too!

Thank you for listening. Your support makes this podcast a beautiful thing.

Episode 24 – Robin LeBlanc

Show notes! I got yer show notes right here!

This week’s interview is Robin LeBlanc, one of the authors of the Ontario Craft Beer Guide. The 2nd edition drops in May so I have thoughtfully provided for you an Amazon link to make with the purchase. You can also find Robin at her personal website, the Thirsty Wench. If you especially like supporting independent beer journalism, head over to her Patreon.

You can find the show on iTunes and Stitcher, as well as listening here on the website. Do me a solid and leave a review or rating? I appreciate it.

I am all over the place online: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. Untappd is also where I live but I can’t give you that link because I can’t remember my password (I just never log out). But I can be found there too!

Big thanks to everyone I talked to and hung out with this past Saturday! You made a good day great. See you all next week!

Episode 22 – Jen Nadwodny of Dieu du Ciel

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Y’all, I know this episode is late. Like, so late. But I will say that it is worth the delay as it features probably my favourite Canadian craft brewer. (Oh, lbr, yes, they are my favourite.) Dieu du Ciel has been brewing the best beers since 1998 and they show no signs of stopping. Their brews were instrumental in my “beer-ucation”. I talked with one of their brewers, the fabulous Jen Nadwodny. It was a fun chat and I am sure you will enjoy as much as I did.

I am finishing up a contract gig at CFRC, Kingston’s local community/campus radio station. I am on the air there every Saturday morning from 8-10 am with my partner. Check it out on their website–which streams all over the world–or download their Android/iPhone app that does the same. It’s a bit of goofy fun but I love doing it.

Oh hey, I am in the latest issue of Kingston Life! You can find the link to read about my passion for this podcast and for this city.

Listen to the latest episodes via this website, or head on over to iTunes or Stitcher to get your HH fix during your day! I appreciate any reviews you leave on either site as it makes sure that I can continue to talk to great ladies in beer (and cider and spirits). Social media is a great way to get in touch with me; I’m active on all the usual channels: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.

I thank you for listening and I thank you for all the support! I’m toying with the idea of Friday episodes! Thoughts?
