Episode 45 – Little Beasts Brewing Company

And here we are in the second week of a New Year!

First of all, thanks for being patient while I sorted out behind the scenes tech stuff here at the podcast.  A problem occurred with our hosting so I spent Christmas figuring it out. But huzzah, it is done!

This also caused me to delay a great interview that I bring to you now. Erin Broadfoot is one half of the partnership that forms Little Beasts Brewing Company. They brew some pretty tasty beers;  I was lucky to talk with Erin before Christmas. I can’t wait for you to hear it!

Another request that if you could rate and review the show on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, and Google Play., I would appreciate it. Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, especially if you like adorable cat pics (who doesn’t?).  Say hi by calling the Harpy Hour Hotline at 1-833-854-2779, or 1-833-85-HARPY. It’s toll free in the US and Canada!

California is the place to be next week so see you then!

Episode 43 – Blue Canoe Brewing Company

I’m chatting with Macie Fellows of Blue Canoe Brewing Company this week. Blue Canoe resides in Little Rock, the state capital of Arkansas. (I still really want one of those pint glasses!)

Follow the show on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. You can call the Harpy Hour Hotline anytime at 1-833-85-HARPY (1-833-854-2779). Additionally, the Christmas Beer Advent Calendar arrives soon! A few friends and I tackle the madness on Facebook Live soon. Stay tuned!

Episode 38 – Yellowhammer Brewing

I wrap up the Alabama part of the 50 States Beer Project this Friday by chatting with Dana Stricklen and Sonya Petroff of Yellowhammer Brewing. Yellowhammer not only brews beer, but as you will hear in the interview, soon they will have a distillery as well!

And I want to thank all of my interviewees for September. I hope to some day visit Alabama because great beer = will travel.

Come see me tomorrow at the Food Feminism Fermentation conference at McGill! It will be fun, I promise you.

Also, follow the show on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. You can hear Harpy Hour on Apple Podcasts and Stitcher.

Because I will be out of town next week, there will be no new episode on Friday, October 6th. But it’s Alaska’s turn at the table on the 13th so be sure to tune in then! Thanks for listening!

Episode 37 – Michelle Williams of Good People Brewing Company

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Here we are again, celebrating the best Alabama has to offer in craft beer!

This week, I chat with Michelle Williams from Good People Brewing Company. The brewery, located in Birmingham, makes the claim of being the first and oldest in the state! Take a glance at their website and you’ll see Good People commits themselves to making good beer. I enjoyed my interview with Michelle and therefore plan on making my way to Good Beer in the future.  Seems like you should do the same?

Reminder I am in Montreal on September 30th for the Food Feminism Fermentation Conference at McGill University. Joined by Jen Nadwodny (former HH interviewee and Dieu du Ciel brewer), Deborah Wood (international beer judge), and Laura Urtnowski (co-founder of Brasseurs du Nord/Boreale). Therefore, I’d love to see some of your shining faces there! Maybe we can grab a beer afterwards?

Say hi on Twitter, Instagram, and/or Facebook. Additionally, you can call the Harpy Hour Hotline: 1-833-85-HARPY (1-833-854-2779). Find the podcast on Stitcher and Apple Podcasts. Rate, review, recommend to help the show grow!

Most of all, thank you for listening!

Episode 23 – Kingston Craft Beer Festival 2017 – UPDATED

Download the latest Harpy Hour!

Correction: Hi guys, I’m updating this as I had the incorrect list of brewers attending the festival. I apologize for the oversight. I’ve amended this entry to reflect the correct beer list. So sorry!

It’s April and April means the beer festival season BEGINS.

I’m headed to The Brooklyn’s annual Kingston Craft Beer Festival on the 8th and oh man, is it gonna be fun. Yes, it is sold out, but there might be tickets at the door. This week’s episode talks about what new breweries I’m looking forward to, beer styles I prefer, and why I wish I knew more about cider.

I promise in the episode that I would give you with a list of participating breweries (complete with links!). If you are a fan of any of them, let me know which ones. I want to know about some of the new-to-me ones I’ve mention.

Without further ado:

Whew! A lot breweries, sure, but most of all, a lot of noteworthy breweries. This list is subject to change, because beer festivals can be in flux. As a result, check online before heading over to avoid disappointment.

Find the show on iTunes and Stitcher. Connect with me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and on Untappd. Furthermore, if you see me at this festival, come say hi, and take a picture with me for the Instagram feed, yes? I will see you there!

Episode 22 – Jen Nadwodny of Dieu du Ciel

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Y’all, I know this episode is late. Like, so late. But I will say that it is worth the delay as it features probably my favourite Canadian craft brewer. (Oh, lbr, yes, they are my favourite.) Dieu du Ciel has been brewing the best beers since 1998 and they show no signs of stopping. Their brews were instrumental in my “beer-ucation”. I talked with one of their brewers, the fabulous Jen Nadwodny. It was a fun chat and I am sure you will enjoy as much as I did.

I am finishing up a contract gig at CFRC, Kingston’s local community/campus radio station. I am on the air there every Saturday morning from 8-10 am with my partner. Check it out on their website–which streams all over the world–or download their Android/iPhone app that does the same. It’s a bit of goofy fun but I love doing it.

Oh hey, I am in the latest issue of Kingston Life! You can find the link to read about my passion for this podcast and for this city.

Listen to the latest episodes via this website, or head on over to iTunes or Stitcher to get your HH fix during your day! I appreciate any reviews you leave on either site as it makes sure that I can continue to talk to great ladies in beer (and cider and spirits). Social media is a great way to get in touch with me; I’m active on all the usual channels: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.

I thank you for listening and I thank you for all the support! I’m toying with the idea of Friday episodes! Thoughts?

Episode 20 – Burial Brewing Company, Asheville NC

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Alas, we’ve come to the end of my trip down South to visit breweries.

We are ending it on a damn high note, though. My final Southeastern US interview is with Jess Reiser, one of the owners/founders of Burial Brewing Company in Asheville, NC. Burial was probably hands down one of the most tasty and inventive breweries I had the pleasure to go to….as you can probably tell from the very tipsy mini-episode I believe I posted when I reviewed two (!) flights of their beer. I talked to Jess via Skype before Christmas about Burial’s start and an exciting new development for their future. I thank her and every single lady I had the pleasure to meet and interview when I was down there from the bottom of my heart.

But never fear, this episode and all the others are available on iTunes and Stitcher for your listening pleasure. Leave a review and rating for a gold star*! You can swing by and talk to me via social media if you so choose; I am on Twitter, Instagram (sorry for any cat pics but our cat is super cute), and Facebook.

I’ve got a new batch of interviews in the works so stay tuned to see who turns up next! See you soon!

*a figurative gold star, sorry

Episode 19 – Abbey of the Holy Goats, Roswell GA

Download the latest Harpy Hour!
Bonjour, mes amis! I hope you’re staying warm this winter and drinking some fine beers to boot.

This week on Harpy Hour, we have an interview with Kathy Davis, the owner and head brewer of the Abbey of the Holy Goats in Roswell, Georgia, just a bit north of Atlanta. Not only does she make exceptional Belgian-style beers, Kathy’s story of how beer became her life is very intriguing. I would recommend that you plan a visit to the Abbey and sample her beers, especially as the massive table in the tasting room is also worthy of wonder. I hope the Georgia laws change soon because I would happily buy any of the Abbey’s beer to sample here in Canada (I know, I know, not likely).

You can find Harpy Hour episodes on the go at iTunes and Stitcher. I would absolutely love it if you left a review and rating for it on those places. I am totally accessible and nice all across social media–Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. While I work away at the European Winter Beer Calendar (aka Craft Beer Advent Calendar), I will be posting mini-episodes of what I tried every Wednesday! If you want to see the bottles, they will be on the HH Instagram feed.

We are heading back up to Asheville one last time next Monday! See you then!

Winter Brews 09: Fabryka Piwa Deep Space

Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in awesome beer.

Fabryka Piwa Deep Space

I did not have high hopes upon seeing the label, but was blown away by what was inside… Fabryka Piwa Deep Space was dynamite! I thoroughly enjoyed this extra stout, and it is probably taking the award for my favourite beer so far as we reach the 33% mark in this European advent beer calendar journey.

Background music is “Jon Benjamin: Jazz Daredevil“, because my husband is a weirdo with a dumb sense of humour.

Winter Brews 08: Schloss Eggenberg Silver Bottle Beer

Well, bah.

We’ve had a lot of highs and very few lows so far, and — despite having the funkiest bottle to date — this is far and away my least favourite beer in the Advent Calendar to date. Silver Bottle is apparently one of the top-selling Austrian beers in Austria, so I guess I’m not terribly surprised that my takeaway is that it’s basically like EuroBud, which is like Air Bud but it’s a beer instead of a dog, it doesn’t play basketball, and it sort of sucks.

Schloss Eggenberg Silver Bottle Beer

Boo.
